Keeping track of education and certification
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 15, 2007
In exploring ways to track and recognize nurses who have received certification or have been recertified, St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital decided to purchase a software package that would help it monitor nurse education levels, certifications, and professional organization membership. The option chosen was PeopleSoft®, an application that enables organizations to improve performance by tracking certifications and other data, says Sallie Latty, MA, BSN, RN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator.
Latty says that in the past, St. Vincent nursing directors used a cumbersome manual process to track data, but PeopleSoft® makes the process of capturing nursing data easier. Data collected includes initial nursing education, highest nursing education, educational plans for the future, nursing certifications, options for involvement in evidence-based practice, presentations, and continuing education.
"We are currently working with our IT department to optimize the PeopleSoft® application and the capabilities it offers," says Latty.
