Providing monetary rewards in unionized organizations

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 8, 2007

St. Rose Dominican Hospital has three facilities in Las Vegas, all of which are union organizations in the process of receiving ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation. To provide monetary rewards to staff nurses, St. Rose Dominican Hospital has a sign-off agreement and process with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), says Anne Wagner, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator. "We pride ourselves on having a collaborative relationship with our staff and SEIU in working together toward common goals-monetary and quality alike," says Wagner.

Based on St. Rose Dominican's experiences, Wagner gives suggestions on providing monetary rewards:

  1. When developing monetary rewards, ensure that bargaining unit employees are an integral part of the discussions
  2. Make sure the bargaining unit employees help determine the amount of any monetary reward
  3. It may be easier to offer bonuses, rather than pay differentials, to ensure continuity with contract negotiations
