What type of stress affects you most?

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, May 7, 2007

By identifying where your stress originates, you will be able to better take control of the pressures surrounding you. Stress comes in a variety of forms and from a number of places. The following are the most common types:

  • Personal stress. Comes from your personal life and includes your own perception of yourself and relationships. Impacts your self-esteem and feelings of self-worth.
  • Physiological stress. Results from various kinds of stress and how your body responds to the stress.
  • Social stress. Related to your perceived appearance in the world. For example, the personal stressor of getting married is also a source of social stress. Why? Because there will be societal opinions and reactions to your new marital relationship.
  • Environmental stress. Largely unavoidable stress caused by the nature of the world around us (e.g., noise and visual stimuli).
