Fulfilling two roles
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 24, 2007
York Hospital in York, PA--a hospital currently applying for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation--has teamed with York College's BSN nursing program to help nurses from York Hospital teach at the college as adjunct faculty. The two institutions have created guidelines to allow RNs to continue to fulfill their roles as staff nurses while also spending time teaching. The guidelines focus on compliance and time tracking to keep staff nurses' roles at the hospital distinct and separate from work at the local college. The program provides the following incentives to staff nurses and adjunct faculty:
- Allows nursing staff, who previously worked full time at the hospital and part time for York College, to work as a clinical nurse at the hospital part time, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the college part time.
- Allows nursing staff to remain full-time employees of York Hospital
- Allows nursing staff to continue to receive full-time benefits (i.e., health, vacation, pension) from the hospital
- Allows nursing staff to maintain full-time hospital salary along with annual market adjustments and merit increases
Valerie Hardy-Sprenkle, RN, MPH, CNAA, vice president patient care services, says the program is successful for both organizations because local colleges are in need of adjunct faculty and York Hospital needs nurses. "We also believe this program will prevent exhaustion for our nurses who are trying to do both roles--staff nurse and adjunct faculty," says Hardy-Sprenkle. And to ensure staffing needs in the units are met when a nurse has dual roles, nurse managers fill the vacant position.
