Communicating with color

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 17, 2007

Non-verbal communication among patients and staff at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico, MO--a hospital in the beginning stages of applying for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation--is as easy as red, yellow, and green. To keep nurses injury-free and improve quality care with patients, Audrain Medical Center patients wear colored badges to communicate to staff how much assistance they need to stand or walk. If a patient is wearing red, they are incapable of standing or walking; if they wear yellow, they need some assistance; and if their badge is green, they are capable of standing or walking on their own. Jo Ellen Craghead, RN, MSN, CCRN, PCCN, director of educational services, says the colored badges have been useful for the nurses. "If a nurse from x-ray comes to transport a patient, the nurse will immediately know how much help that patient needs from the colored badge," says Craghead.
