A Sunnyvale, CA, technology company that developed a translation system for hospitals recently received an $850,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Fluential Inc.'s two-way translation equipment helps nurses communicate with patients who speak Spanish or Cantonese; although the system will not completely eliminate the need for professional interpreters, the company expects that the technology will facilitate 80-90% of routine nursing encounters with non-English speaking patients.
Fluential built the system on technology originally designed for the military. The type of grant it received from NIH, called a "fast-track" grant, is reserved for projects that show the most potential for commercial success.
