New technology improves perioperative communication

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 10, 2007

Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN) is taking a step to improve the efficiency of surgical care and communication throughout its perioperative units. LVHHN has three hospital locations--two in Allenstown, PA, and one in Bethlehem, PA,--and received ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation in 2002 for all three hospitals. It was also named as one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" in 2007.

LVHHN is in the process of implementing Amelior ORTracker® from Patient Care Technology Systems in its perioperative departments. The software serves as a tracking system for patients and medical devices, and works by tracking the wireless badges worn by patients and installed on medical devices. This improves patient flow as facilities have access to real-time information. In addition, the software keeps a record of patient interactions with medical staff and medical equipment, creating an accurate timeline of a patient's care, and allowing communication throughout the continuum of care.
