Four tips to implement nursing research on a low budget

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 10, 2007

Implementing a research program with limited resources, and little funds to employ a nurse researcher, can sometimes leave non-academic and/or smaller community-based hospitals searching for tips on how to develop a research process. The following list provides four ways to become productive when creating a research agenda on a low budget:

  1. Establish relationships with nearby colleges because Master's students need sites for their research projects and this will ensure the hospital's participation in these projects
  2. Build a requirement into the project terms that all results from the study are immediately reported back to the nursing staff
  3. Create research poster presentations about important topics that concern direct care nurses and discuss these topics at staff meetings
  4. Implement nursing grand rounds and get direct care nurses to participate. Have them identify a clinical issue, research the issue, and then gather the staff at a luncheon to have the nurses present their findings
