Self-concept is an important principle for the manager to recognize in employee motivation. The average person has an image of his or her self that may be inaccurate. And when an individual wants to be a particular kind of person, his or her thoughts and actions will be built around that idea. Such persons are often concerned about what others think of them, so the manager needs to use the following techniques for "face saving" when dealing with this employee:

  • Appreciation: Individuals desire to be treated with respect and dignity. They prefer individual identity to the feeling that they are just a number.
  • Feeling of importance: Each employee needs to be reminded that his or her job is important and vital to the organization. The employee needs and deserves ongoing recognition and praise.
  • Good leadership: This is an important factor in the utilization of human resources. The manager must be supportive and appreciative of the employees if he or she expects the same in return.
  • Communication: Effective communication is essential for the smooth operation of the organization. Poor communication can cause chaos, produce rumors, and increase frustration.
