Five organizational and community involvement ideas

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 3, 2007

One characteristic of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® is an environment in which professional staff throughout the organization participate in nursing organizations and programs at the local, state, national, and/or international level. Involvement in these activities not only supports the professional practice environment, it also benefits the community. As a role model for professional involvement in organizations and community events, CNEs and other senior nurse leaders need to encourage staff to contribute to the nursing profession in many ways. To get started, the following list provides five key ideas to exemplify involvement in professional organizations and the community:

  • Include membership in professional organizations and active participation as part of the clinical ladder
  • Participate in community health fairs
  • Participate in parish nursing programs
  • Present research to the professional community
  • Recognize bedside staff nurses who present sessions or poster presentations at national and local organizations
