Physician involvement in the journey to designation
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 27, 2007
This week, a reader wants to know how to get physicians involved in the journey to designation. Read the response below from our advisor Elise I. Gropper, PhD, APRN,BC, CPHQ, president, Gropper & Associates, Inc., a national healthcare consulting firm in Coral Springs, FL.
Q: What is the best way to get physicians involved in the journey to designation?
A: Physicians need to be involved in the organization's journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation from the start, and it is a good idea to have the CNO present an overview of the application process to the medical staff at the beginning of the journey. Physician support is imperative to a successful application. During the site visit, the appraisers will hold a special meeting with medical staff members to determine their support and how nurses and physicians communicate with one another. Keep your medical staff informed of your progress each step of the way, and involve them in interdisciplinary committees and designation support functions.
