Budget considerations: Costs for staff nurse participation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 27, 2007

Determining the costs of staff nurse participation in nursing committees and assistance with aspects of the journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation varies immensely among organizations.  In organizations focused on career ladders and professional development, participation is expected as part of professional practice, and staff are not compensated for committee participation. In other organizations, eight hours of professional development per nurse has been built into the operational budget, and during the journey, this time is devoted to active involvement and participation in related projects and committees. At times, creativity is needed to remain budget-neutral. In one designated facility, the nursing leadership team and unit managers assisted with unit coverage to allow staff nurses to attend meetings and work on projects related to designation.
