Weekly Q&A: Using area designations to your advantage

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 20, 2007

This week, a reader wants to know how to keep the momentum going strong when area facilities are achieving designation. Read the response below from our advisor Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: We are well on our way on our journey to designation, but other facilities in the immediate area are having their site visits and achieving designation. Our site visit is still several months away. How can we keep the momentum going strong?

A: The success of nearby facilities in achieving ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation can work to your advantage and enhance the momentum for staff at your facility. Call the project director of a nearby hospital that has just completed the site visit, or one that has just received designation, and ask him or her to come to your facility and speak about the visit, or relate what it is like to obtain designation. This is a wonderful opportunity to ask any last minute questions that come up. An excited project director is contagious, and can help you keep the momentum going strong.

This is also an opportunity to have your staff visit a newly designated facility. Perhaps you will find last minute information that will be helpful during your site visit. For facilities that are just in the process of submission, you may find helpful hints to make the process smoother. Relay the information obtained from nearby facilities to your organization in a newsletter. Include a congratulatory message to the newly designated facility.
