A task force appointed by the Michigan Legislature recently released a report issuing recommendations to help curb the state's nursing shortage.

Attributing Michigan's nurse shortage to a lack of nursing faculty, the 19-member committee endorsed a proposal that would allocate $15 million across the next three years to fund tuition for 500 nurses pursuing Master's Degrees.

To reduce the community college nursing drop-out rate, the task force recommended increasing funding for mentors and counselors that help students balance their education alongside other responsibilities. In addition, the task force called on the state to distribute more funds directly to community colleges, rather than simply covering students' tuition, to help the colleges increase capacity.
