Designation and shared governance's shared central elements

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 13, 2007

The journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® shares two central elements with the shared governance process model: cultural enhancements and structural enhancements.

  • Cultural enhancements. The work environment is changed during this process, enabling and empowering nurses at the point of care to improve and enhance patient outcomes. The journey will not be successful without a culture of shared decision-making among professional nurses and the interdisciplinary team members (clinical and administrative) being in place first.
  • Structural enhancements. A strategic plan is built around the autonomy of nurses to share decision making and to function in four primary professional roles: clinical practice, education, research, and administration. Shared governance provides a professional practice environment in which nurses can develop and mature in these roles to enhance the organizational culture effectively.
