Weekly Q&A: Creative ways to beef up your steering committee

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 6, 2007

This week, a reader asks for advice on how to recruit staff to serve on the steering committee. Read the response below from our advisor Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: How can I recruit staff to serve on the steering committee?

A: There are several effective approaches. If the roles and responsibilities of membership are well-defined, consider developing a recruitment or search flyer that is fun and inviting, but not intimidating, to help drum up interest in the committee. Some organizations have used a nomination process where nursing staff from each patient care unit select a representative from their unit to serve on the steering committee. This provides an opportunity for staff to be involved in the decision-making process, and it helps the organization as it moves toward a culture of nursing excellence.

Another approach is to have nurse managers select a member from their units to serve on the committee. The advantage to this method is that the members are "hand picked" to meet the criteria established for serving as a committee member.
