California college expands nursing program
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, March 5, 2007
The door at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA, is now open to night and weekend nursing students.
The college recently hired two new professors and this spring will increase its enrollment by 20 students thanks to the extended hours. With the help of a $395,000 state grant, the two-year community college will also be able to upgrade facilities and purchase new equipment.
The aim of the improvements is to help curb the severe nursing shortage in the state. Surveys show that California is ranked 49th out of 50 states with a ratio of only 5.75 nurses per 1,000 residents, according to the North County Times. The area around Palomar College is even lower, with 3.56 nurses per 1,000 residents.
