Designated facility receives nurse retention grant

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 27, 2007

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has awarded nearly $70,000 to the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital of Cooperstown, NY, to help test new ways to keep experienced nurses in the nation's healthcare facilities. Bassett Hospital, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP)-designated facility since 2004, is one of 13 facilities nationwide selected by RWJF to participate in the new program, Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses. The program will build an evidence base for what strategies or programs work to help hospitals retain qualified nurses. During the 18-month grant, Bassett Hospital will evaluate its Admission Nurse Program-established in 2001-that offers experienced nurses four-hour shifts in a work schedule they choose, as well as a scope of practice that fits their skills and experience. Bassett Hospital met RWJF's grant eligibility by holding MRP status and having an established program that targets experienced nurses, age 45 and older.
