In Rhode Island, the House recently approved a ban on mandatory overtime for nurses at all of the state's public and private hospitals.
The five-page bill bans the use of mandatory overtime-and bans any hospital from making a nurse work more than 12 hours-except in a "bona fide emergency," which is described as an "unpredictable or unavoidable occurrence," such as a major power outage.
If a hospital violates the ban, it will be subject to fines of up to $300 for each violation. It will also owe each affected employee an amount equal to two times that of the employee's hourly wage for each illegally-required hour of work.
