Weekly Q&A: Developing research agendas at smaller facilities
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 20, 2007
This week, a reader seeks advice about developing a research agenda at a small facility. Read the response below from our advisor Katherine Riley, MSN, RN, CNA,BC, assistant vice president of operations and ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
Q: Do you have advice for smaller facilities in developing a research agenda?
A: There are many creative options for smaller facilities to consider when developing a research agenda for their organization. Master's students frequently seek sites for their research projects, so establish relationships with nearby colleges to ensure that your organization is able to participate in these projects. Aim to build a requirement into the project terms so that the results of the study are reported back to your nursing staff. Develop research poster presentations about topics that are important to direct care nurses and discuss these topics at staff meetings. Implement nursing grand rounds and ask direct care nurses who are interested in participating to identify a clinical issue, research the issue, and then present their findings at a luncheon meeting.
