Budgeting for the journey
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 20, 2007
The journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation can be a costly one, as money is spent on everything from paper and pens to the application fee. The University of Missouri Health Care System decided to include the necessary funds in the nursing administration budget, says LuAnn Tandy, RN, BSN, MRP coordinator.
"We put staffing dollars in a separate account to pay for shared governance time," Tandy says. "This way it doesn't count against our hours per patient day and we can keep track of how much money we are spending on meetings."
Tandy says she budgets for the following:
- Ink pens-a great giveaway
- Food for meetings
- Supporting nurses to get certified
- Consultants
- Copying costs
- Books to support leaders and staff
- Travel for conferences
