Evidence-based practice and designation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 20, 2007

Many healthcare organizations increase their attention to evidence-based practice when they begin to seek ANCC Magnet Recognition Program designation®. When the chief nurse executive begins the pathway for working toward designation, evidence about professional practice environments may guide the journey. Research findings about the best practice environments to recruit and retain nurses while improving patient outcomes may serve as a major objective in the effort.

Chief nurse executives support professional practice environments by integrating evidence into every nursing effort. A nursing organization may have decades of experience with evidence-based practice or may be adopting it as a relatively new strategy. For it to be successful, all clinicians must focus on best practices and ready-to-use evidence. In the pursuit of designation, some nursing organizations believe that having nurses use evidence will be enough to meet or exceed the criteria.
