You may be asking yourself, "What does coaching have to do with being a nurse manager? I don't deal with a football team every day." But even though it may not be a football team you're supervising, coaching has everything to do with your role as a manager. Grasping coaching skills will improve your achievements as a leader. Encourage an environment conducive to productivity by doing the following:
- Help employees achieve success by helping them grow as problem-solvers.
- Spread your own enthusiasm, because if a manager is excited about a new game plan, the team will be as well.
- Maintain high performance expectations, which can best be accomplished when the employee has accepted the goals and objectives of the organization.
- Encourage employees to exercise independent judgment; sometimes the player needs to make a call on the field without a signal from the coach.
- Provide recognition and reward, since each employee likes to be recognized for a job well done. You can never overdo your bragging and praise of the team.
