Northern Illinois University's School of Nursing in Elgin is receiving a $450,000 grant to increase enrollment, with an emphasis on recruiting more minorities into the program.

NIU took a cue from a 2004 national report, the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Health Workforce, which emphasized the need for minorities in healthcare. That study found African-Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians make up 25% of the population, but the three groups account for less than 9% of nurses, 6% of doctors, and 5% of dentists.

African-American and Hispanic nursing students will be recruited from Aurora and Elgin, where the university has partnerships with Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora and Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. The university's nursing program is expected to increase its enrollment by 20% overall.
