Texas governor Rick Perry proposed a $73.6 million initiative to support nontraditional training, recruitment, and retention programs for nurses to help curb the state's nursing shortage.

Perry proposed a $56.8 million initiative to pilot nontraditional training programs at hospitals and $16.8 million in grants for creative ways to educate, recruit, and retain nursing students and faculty.

The proposal was part of a comprehensive higher education funding package announced by the governor. The Texas Hospital Association applauded the governor's commitment to addressing the state's growing shortage of nurses.
