Weekly Q&A: Nursing's relationship with other departments

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 13, 2007

This week, a reader wants to know how to show in the evidence that nursing has a good relationship with other departments. Read the response below from our advisor Barbara (BJ) Hannon, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®coordinator at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Q: How can I show in the evidence that nursing has a good relationship with other departments?

A: Professionals are admired for maintaining positive relationships. Evidence chosen to explain this must exhibit collegiality and collaboration between nurses and staff outside of the department of nursing.

The key is the phrase "good relationships." Choose evidence that depicts nurses engaged with staff from all disciplines. Examples of ways to exhibit good relationships include the following:

  • Providing evidence of 360-degree peer reviews from nonnursing personnel for nurses
  • Using digital photos of interdisciplinary events depicting nurses alongside other employees
  • Illustrating nurses receiving awards from an interdisciplinary arena
  • Providing examples of interdisciplinary staff attendance at nursing functions
  • Providing short narratives from a variety of nonnursing staff describing how they view nurses
