The pursuit of excellence overseas

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 13, 2007

The quest for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation has become a global journey, as healthcare facilities worldwide are working toward-and achieving-designation. Although achieving designation is a difficult and complex task, pursuing it at an international facility presents additional challenges. At the same time, some problems are similar to those faced in the United States, such as the recruitment and retention of staff nurses. The following are some of the challenges-and solutions-that staff at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, are encountering:

  • Challenge-Globalization and technology: "Nurses come from areas where they are not exposed to the advanced technology we have within our Medical City," says Diane Presley, RN, MSN, SKMC's regional director of nursing.
Solution: To educate nurses, an orientation program has been established on all units, and mentors note competency related to standards, equipment, and care scopes, Presley says.
  • Challenge-Recruitment and retention: The nursing shortage is a global phenomenon.
Solution: "We have an attractive tax-free salary and benefits package," Presley says. "We have just started longevity recognition awards and dinners for our staff. Specialty training for nurses who want to expand their skill set has been established, which leads to an international certificate award."
