Shared governance and community partnerships
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 13, 2007
Nurses engaged in shared governance often partner with members of their communities in activities that reflect positively on the organization and nursing service. They share in the decision-making about which activities to support and to provide. This helps to meet Force 10: Community and the healthcare organization. Community collaborations include those with staff nurses participating in outreach programs, such as the following:
- Offering a CPR day for community members each year
- Presenting an annual health fair with the involvement of staff nurses who negotiate the vendors and activities for various patient populations from the community
- Obtaining affiliations with local universities and colleges for nurses to continue their academic educations on hospital grounds
- Allocating and using appropriate resources to support various projects (e.g., an internship program that brings high school students into the organization during the summer and teaches them how to communicate and interact with patients)
