Nurses and physicians at Kaiser Permanente hospitals in California are taking part in medical emergency simulation exercises to improve teamwork and performance under pressure.

The training program derives from crew resource management techniques pioneered by the aviation industry. The simulations seek to bridge communication gaps between physicians and nurses, and eliminate traditional hierarchies that prevent many nurses from voicing concerns about potential medical mistakes.

To promote teamwork and encourage nurses to be more assertive during stressful situations, the program exposes clinicians to mock emergencies using advanced patient simulators. In addition, the simulations teach staff to conduct preoperative briefings to ensure care teams understand upcoming procedures.
