Weekly Q&A: Integrating research into nursing practice

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 6, 2007

This week, a reader asks for tips on integrating research into nursing practice. Read the response below from our advisor Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: Do you have any tips for how to integrate research into nursing practice?

A: The first approach you might consider is to provide research education to the nursing staff. Programs might include

  • how to read and critique research
  • the relationship between evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement
  • translating research into practice

You could start with ensuring that as nursing policies and procedures are reviewed, they are supported by evidence-based practice.

The implementation of research roundtables serves as an excellent mechanism to facilitate the translation of research into practice. The roundtables serve as a venue to discuss pertinent clinical issues, review practice-related research findings, and to promote decision-making with regard to translating the findings into clinical practice. The research roundtables are also an outlet for increasing collaboration with nursing staff and providing opportunity for autonomy with regard to decisions that affect clinical practice.
