Establishing a shared governance model

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 6, 2007

Establishing a shared governance model can be challenging and time-consuming, but at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, GA, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated facility since 2005, they made it happen. "We utilized many of Tim Porter-O'Grady's tenets in establishing our model and spent a great deal of time engaging staff nurses and managers in developing all the bylaws," says Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, director, learning center. When the facility first began rolling out the model, there were nearly 80 councils at the Medical Center, but within six months that number had been consolidated to about half. "A big lesson learned for us was to be adaptable and willing to change the bylaws and infrastructure as the model evolves," Montgomery says. She adds that key enablers for success have included

  • strong chairpersons with excellent clinical, organizational, and communication skills
  • advisors who are committed to shared governance success
  • interested staff members who are educated and mentored
  • shared governance visibility and early successes
