Southern Illinois is trying to avoid the growing nursing shortage with the help of retention programs launched by healthcare corporations.

Southern Illinois Healthcare of Carbondale, an employer of 578 registered nurses, offers its employees a scholarship program that covers tuition for the two-year program for interested nurses in exchange for a commitment of employment for a certain number of years within SIH hospitals.

Nurses can also enroll in a critical care preceptor program, which trains recent graduates who want to work in operating rooms or ICUs.
