Weekly Q&A: Strategies to involve OR nurses in the journey to designation
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 23, 2007
This week, a reader wants to know how to get OR nurses involved in the journey to designation. Read the response below from our advisor Elise I. Gropper, PhD, APRN,BC, CPHQ, president, Gropper & Associates, Inc., a national healthcare consulting firm in Coral Springs, FL.
Q: Do you have suggestions for how to get OR nurses-specifically perioperative-involved in the journey to designation?
A: All nurses in all departments and areas should be actively involved. The type of involvement should reflect practice in the specialty area. For instance, nursing recruitment and retention activities should reflect the perioperative area, and evidence-based practice should focus on perioperative nursing. Unit-based practice councils should be working on improvement of care and services within their respective areas.
Perioperative nurses should also be appointed to organizationwide and interdepartmental committees that reflect their practice area. An interesting nursing study for the PACU area could be the effect of classical music on pain control and whether there is a change in the amount of pain medications needed.
