Breaking ground: How renovations model the 14 Forces of Magnetism

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 16, 2007

Having been an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated facility since 1998, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) in Neptune, NJ, is incorporating aspects of the 14 Forces of Magnetism into its plans for a $300 million expansion and renovation project. Within the design of the new nursing floors, there will be three 36-bed units. Each unit will comprise three 12-bed neighborhoods. In each neighborhood, the rooms will surround a nurses' station and support area. Each neighborhood also has a subnurses lounge, designed so that nurses can take a break while still being close to their patients in case they are needed. In addition, there will be a full nurses' lounge down the hall.

Richard Hader, RN, PhD, FAAN, senior vice president and CNO at JSUMC says aspects of the project exemplify Force 2: Organizational structure, in that, "It allows for decentralized decision-making at the unit level. It provides the opportunity for staff to become engaged in the work environment. The whole design of this new transformation project was designed by the staff; they were very involved in this." Other Forces the expansion and renovation project has had close ties with include Force 1: Quality of nursing leadership, Force 3: Management style, Force 5: Professional models of care, and Force 9: Autonomy.
