Redesignation motivation comes from a quack

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 9, 2007

To increase the enthusiasm and motivation of staff before the redesignation site visit, staff nurses at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP)-designated facility since 2002, created a mascot known as MRP Duck. The stuffed animal duck was purchased from the hospital's gift shop by a patient's relative and was given to the nurses as a thank you gift for the excellent care they provided to the patient. The nurses dressed the duck in scrubs and pasted the words "MRP Duck" across its shirt. The duck attended all Champion and hospitalwide nurse meetings. The duck became a symbol representative of the journey to redesignation.

On the day of the site visit, the duck was placed on a table with four smaller ducks and a sign that read, "Welcome! All our ducks are in a row." Joy Shiller RN, BSN, MS, CAPA, clinical mentor, says, "As a result, the site visit was met with less anxiety and more enthusiasm than was ever anticipated." When The Methodist Hospital was awarded redesignation in 2006, a pinning ceremony was held, and all nurses-including the duck-received an MRP status pin.
