Weekly Q&A: Showing the commitment to cultural competence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 2, 2007

This week, a reader seeks advice about how to show the organization's commitment to cultural competence. Read the response below from our advisor Katherine Riley, BSN, RN, CNA,BC, assistant vice president of operations and ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Q: How can I show in the evidence that my organization is committed to cultural competence?

A: The organization should demonstrate its commitment to cultural competence by providing educational programs that deal with cultural diversity in healthcare and in the workplace. Define the cultural diversity of both the patient population and staff. Provide interactive educational programs that define diversity as broader than ethnic diversity. An aged patient population, the poor, and bariatric patients are all examples of cultural diversity that present unique challenges in care delivery. Where ethnic diversity is prevalent, the use of patient educational materials, signs, and postings in appropriate languages can demonstrate a commitment to cultural sensitivity and awareness.
