Apply evidence-based practice to staff satisfaction

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 2, 2007

Nurse leaders must be willing to use the latest research findings when implementing management initiatives. They must show a willingness to explore and adopt the best management practices, and the leadership team must strive constantly to improve the practice environment.

For example, an organization's nursing satisfaction surveys might offer evidence that nurses are dissatisfied with rotating shifts. The leadership team then can use this evidence in its efforts to improve nurse satisfaction. Changing a staffing and scheduling framework offers its own challenges, but by not addressing this critical issue a clinical department may suffer from a high turnover rate and may experience lower patient satisfaction scores than other clinical units.
