The Mississippi Corridor Consortium is hoping to turn a $1.9 million federal grant into 3,500 new nursing professionals in the northeast part of the state by 2012.

The consortium, a collection of nursing schools, state agencies, nursing homes, economic development agencies, and hospitals, received the money from the U.S. Department of Labor. The funds will be spent to help get more students through school and to get working nurses into programs where they can obtain higher degrees.

The grant will also be used to introduce middle and high school students to careers in healthcare.
