Weekly Q&A: Demonstrating the CNO's influence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 26, 2006

This week, a reader seeks advice on how to show that the CNO has influenced decision-making and strategic planning. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara (BJ) Hannon, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Q: How can I show in the evidence that the CNO has influenced organizational decision-making and strategic planning?

A: The CNO sets the standard for nurses in the institution. The way in which institutional leadership perceives the entire nursing staff is likely based on senior leadership's perception of the CNO. Show evidence illustrating the CNO's involvement in high-level decisions including capital budget determination, committee searches for department heads, personnel policies, interdisciplinary planning, and strategic planning. Evidence should include a roster list of senior leadership and minutes from senior leadership meetings indicating the CNO's attendance and involvement in discussions. Likewise, strategic planning meeting minutes should reflect the CNO's name on the roster and contributions to the meetings.

Concentrate on showing evidence of the CNO's involvement in institutional operations beyond the department of nursing. Complete evidence showing the CNO's involvement in organizational operations and long-term strategic planning.
