Weekly Q&A: Engaging staff in the journey

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 19, 2006

This week, a reader seeks advice about how to keep staff engaged in the journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status. Read the response below from our advisor, Cindy Goodrich, RN, MSN, EdD, MRP coordinator, Centra Health in Lynchburg, VA.

Q: What are some methods to keep staff engaged in the journey to Magnet Recognition Program® status?

A: MRP status is not an entity separate from day-to-day operations, but rather a way of conducting business. However, it is a challenge to keep staff engaged in the journey. Organizations should create a deliberate plan to initially introduce nursing staff to the MRP concept as well as contribute to the continued integration into each individual nurse's practice.

Determine what information about designation is shared, and what initiatives are in place that provide the basic foundation for participating in a professional practice environment. The assessment includes information from:

  • Human resources-MRP information is shared on initial contact with prospective employees and job descriptions should reflect the Forces of Magnetism
  • Unit level leadership-Managers share the professional expectations that are consistent with the culture
  • Department of Education-Orientation to, and explanation of, designation
  • Preceptor Training Program-Inclusion of the Forces of Magnetism in preceptor training
  • Career Advancement Program-Ascertain how professional behaviors reflect the Forces of Magnetism
  • Annual Performance Appraisal-Evaluate performance against the Forces of Magnetism
  • Internal publications-Profile Forces and best practices in existing publications that are already widely read

Once the assessment is complete, the information should be reviewed by the MRP Advisory Council and the Nurse Executive Council to recommend modifications.
