Pack a tent-it's Camp time
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 19, 2006
A couple of summers ago at Northeast Hospitals, a three-hospital system based in Beverly, MA, clinical educators Jean M. Mellott, MSN, RN, BC, and Judy Michaud, MSN, RN, BC, teamed up to create a memorable ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP)-status awareness program that included a tent, s'mores, fishing, and the 14 Forces of Magnetism.
Camp designation, which consisted of activities mainly completed on individual units, was set up to take the place of the steering committee meetings that were canceled during the summer months. In that time, the campers had nine tasks to complete, ranging from wearing an MRP button to performing a literature search on evidence-based topics. All of the activities combined to create a well-rounded learning and teaching experience for the champions.
The closing ceremonies took place over an eight-hour period during the September steering committee meeting at a campsite (i.e., classroom) at the hospital. Save the actual mosquitos, the educators-dressed as camp counselors-thought of everything, filling the campsite with
- a tent
- a Camp MRP songbook
- s'mores, granola, yogurt, and juice
- a Camp MRP banner, fake trees, and a fake fire
- a fishing hole, complete with crafted fishing poles and paper fish
