Benefits of being in touch with the community

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 19, 2006

Excellent relationships within the community that the organization serves influences the success of nurse recruitment and retention efforts of the department of nursing, and is necessary to exemplify Force 10: Community and the Healthcare Organization. Professional nurses are attracted to organizations that have comprehensive, collaborative relationships with various community and nursing organizations. Professional nurses know that they will benefit from sharing best practice and the educational opportunities that flourish in positive community relationships.

The organization should foster a positive relationship with the community through various programs and services. Institutions conduct many outpatient educational programs such as stop smoking campaigns and cholesterol monitoring events. Nurses also go out into the community to work health fairs in malls and other public locations. In addition to clinical education, nurses also provide nonclinical community services, such as participating in food drives and collecting donations or gifts for holiday gift drives sponsored by the organization.
