When it comes to patient confidentiality and information security, organizations have a lot more than HIPAA to consider. Facilities' specific missions, needs, and industry-wide best practices also have an effect on compliance programs. Also, don't forget about the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

The JCAHO requires organizations to maintain information privacy and confidentiality (standard IM.2.10) IM.2.10 states that organizations must maintain information privacy and confidentiality, and the standard's elements of performance (EP) require organizations to

  • have a written policy or policies that address privacy and confidentiality of information and are based on law or regulation
  • communicate the policy and any changes to staff
  • implement the policy
  • monitor compliance with the policy
  • improve privacy and confidentiality of information by monitoring information and developments in technology
