Six years ago, the nursing turnover rate at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in South Dakota was an alarming 65%. A new program-Transforming Care at the Bedside-has sent that statistic into a dramatic freefall.
The turnover rate is now below 10%.
The program, engineered by the Cambridge, MA-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement, focuses on simple steps, such as getting medications and supplies closer to the bedside, so that nurses can spend more time with patients.
The Institute is known best for its 100,000 Lives campaign that touted evidence-based practices as a way to improve patient care across the country.
