Weekly Q&A: Keeping nursing leaders in plain sight

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 28, 2006

This week, a reader wants to know how to show that nursing leaders are accessible and visible to direct care nurses. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara L. O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., president, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC, Manchester, NJ.

Q: How can I show appraisers that nursing leaders are accessible and visible to direct care nurses?

A: To be effective leaders, the CNO, nursing directors, and managers need to be formally and informally accessible and visible. During the site visit from ANCC appraisers, staff need to clearly articulate the vision and management style of the CNO. Successful strategies for the CNO and other members of nursing leadership to ensure face time with staff, especially in a large institution, include

  • administrative rounds on all shifts (including the CEO, CFO, and other administrators to make these rounds even more effective)
  • CNO luncheons
  • idea exchanges at council meetings
  • patient-care rounds
  • focus groups
  • town meetings
  • leadership programs facilitated by nurse leaders
  • e-mail communication (as a complement to other methods, because this alone is not enough)
