Nurses' role in professional practice models

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 28, 2006

Shared governance is an integral component of professional practice models within the organization. These models essentially promote nurse empowerment by including direct care nurses on organizational committees and in administrative decision-making. The models use a democratic process based upon the combined expertise of a group of nurse professionals. With shared governance, organizations establish several committees or councils to provide collective decision-making and may include one or more of the following:

  1. Coordinating council
  2. Nurse practice or clinical practice council
  3. Quality/performance improvement council
  4. Management council
  5. Education council
  6. Research council

Having nurses participate in the shared governance structure and councils encourages nurses to be autonomous and accountable decision-makers at the point of care. It also encourages them to practice fully within the scope and professional standards of nursing practice, both of which are integral to creating and sustaining an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® culture.
