Ultimate multitasking: Striving for two achievements simultaneously

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 21, 2006

The synergy between the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program is evident from visionary leadership, to quality outcomes, to an empowered staff. "If you look at the Baldrige framework and a Magnet Recognition Program® criteria, there's a strong emphasis on alignment of the organization," says Diane Trimble, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator at Saint Luke's Hospital (SLH) of Kansas City, MO. "Although the Baldrige program has a broader scope than the program, there's an expectation for initiatives to move in the same direction."

After examining other similarities between the two conceptual frameworks, it was only natural for SLH to align the concepts of each program in pursuit of both distinctions. "When we compared the Forces of Magnetism to the Baldrige Core Values and Concepts, we saw a lot of crossover and support," says Trimble.

Because of the interrelatedness between the two programs, Trimble explains that some of the evidence collected to document the Forces of Magnetism, was also used in SLH's Baldrige application and vice versa. After implementing the Baldrige program's Core Values and Concepts and the MRP 14 Forces of Magnetism into the hospital's culture over several years, the organization earned the Baldrige Award in 2003 and achieved designation in 2004.
