Designing the shared governance process

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 21, 2006

Part of the journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status is the development and implementation of a shared governance system. Structure the shared governance format and vision carefully. Identify organizational and nursing's purposes, objectives, goals, direction, and strategic plan; reflect on the organization's mission; and determine the roles that nurses and nurse leaders will have in shared governance (e.g., conceptual base, philosophy, objectives, care standards, performance measures, quality assurance/performance improvement, professional development, and practice).

Select members from nursing service and interdisciplinary teams to form a shared governance design team (or forum, group, steering committee, or coordinating group). They will obtain feedback from leadership and staff; consider nursing's objectives and the organization's goals, mission, and philosophy; and draft a process model for shared governance. Nursing staff and nursing leadership will select the final design to represent an integrated process and structure for shared decision-making toward positive patient outcomes. The structure and process should address each part of professional nursing practice: quality, competence, and practice.
