Instead of tossing its nurses into the fire, All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, is going to let its new hires warm up a bit first.

The hospital, with the help of Versant Advantage, an L.A.-based public benefit corporation, will provide nearly six months of training in a residency program that will include classroom learning, a preceptor's guidance, and a mentor's emotional support. The hope is that turnover will drop at All Children's, while patient safety and proper care will increase.

The cost, reports the Tampa Bay Business Journal, includes a $50,000 start-up fee and a per-resident fee. But the program, hopefully, will help to alleviate the $30,000 it costs to replace an employee.
