Don't waste a minute of designation momentum

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 14, 2006

The momentum for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status journey at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City remains strong while the staff anxiously wait to hear if the written documentation will warrant a site visit. To fill the time and avoid a slump in enthusiasm, Cheryl Smith, MS, RN, MRP coordinator, NCNQI coordinator, and clinical director, transplant ICU, has found several activities and projects to maintain the strong momentum.

Smith says one of the most well received projects her team created was a DVD slideshow of photographs that were included in the written documents. The slide show was accompanied by the song "Wind Beneath My Wings" playing in the background. "As the pictures flashed across the screen, they told the story of our nurses helping during the Oklahoma City Murrah Building bombing, the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita recovery efforts, and of nurses doing missionary and community work, teaching staff and kids," Smith says.

Other projects to retain momentum included reading patient letters, doing skits, and recognizing individual staff who have achieved recognition by professional organizations or from patients' phone calls.
